ISO 9001:2026 – what changes and how to transition

The new edition of ISO 9001 was published on 16 September 2026 – the first substantive revision since 2015. It is an evolution, not a fresh start: the structure stays, some requirements become more explicit. IMScheck is already aligned with the 2026 edition.

BETALaunch phase: IMScheck PRO is free until Jan 1, 2027 – full version, full security.

How IMScheck supports your transition to ISO 9001:2026

  • The task catalogue is aligned with the 2026 edition – notes show what changed compared to 2015.
  • Leadership: quality culture and ethical behaviour as part of the leadership duty, with sub-steps and practical tips.
  • Evaluate risks and opportunities separately, derive actions and check their effectiveness.
  • Context analysis including the relevance of climate change and a review cycle.
  • Gap analysis with the free maturity check, imported as your starting status.

The key changes

Quality culture and ethical behaviour: top management is expected to actively foster a quality culture and ethical behaviour (leadership, clause 5.1). Previously implicit at best, this is now an explicit leadership duty – and part of staff awareness.

Risks and opportunities separated: clause 6.1 treats risks and opportunities as distinct topics. Both are to be determined and evaluated – not just listed – and opportunities actively pursued.

Climate change in the context: the 2024 climate change amendment is now part of the main text. The organisation determines whether climate change is relevant to its quality management (context, clauses 4.1 and 4.2).

Planned changes: planning, communicating and reviewing changes to the management system are emphasised. A new informative annex gives implementation guidance.

What stays the same

The Harmonized Structure with clauses 4 to 10 remains – and with it integration with ISO 14001, 45001, 50001 and 27001. If you maintained your system to the 2015 edition, you extend it rather than start over.

Transition period

A three-year transition period applies, expected to run until September 2029. Until then, ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid. Agree the date of your transition audit early with your certification body.

Transition in six steps

1. Find out where you stand: identify gaps per clause with the free maturity check.

2. Update the context: review internal and external issues, assess and justify the relevance of climate change.

3. Leadership: embed quality culture and ethical behaviour – in vision, policy and management communication.

4. Evaluate risks and opportunities separately and derive actions.

5. Manage changes to the management system in a planned way and document them.

6. Inform staff, audit internally and feed the results into the management review.
