ISO 14001:2026 – what changes and how to transition
The new edition of ISO 14001 was published on 15 April 2026 and replaces the 2015 edition. It sharpens existing requirements rather than reinventing environmental management. IMScheck is already aligned with the 2026 edition.

How IMScheck supports your transition to ISO 14001:2026
- The task catalogue is aligned with the 2026 edition – with standard-specific notes and practical tips.
- Context including environmental conditions such as climate and resource availability.
- Environmental aspects per process for normal, abnormal and emergency conditions, with life-cycle perspective.
- Operational control including externally provided processes and planned changes.
- Shared legal register with health & safety and energy, emergency preparedness as tasks.
The key changes
Environmental conditions in the context: the context analysis explicitly names environmental conditions such as climate change, biodiversity and ecosystems, pollution and the availability of natural resources – both as influences on the organisation and as its impacts.
Life cycle into the supply chain: the life-cycle perspective reaches further, including when defining the scope. Instead of “outsourced processes”, the standard speaks of externally provided processes, products and services.
Planned changes: changes affecting the environmental management system are to be carried out in a planned way so the system keeps achieving its intended outcomes.
Risks, opportunities and policy: risks and opportunities gain weight; the environmental policy also covers protecting natural resources and ecosystems.
What stays the same
Environmental aspects, compliance obligations, emergency preparedness and the evaluation of compliance remain the foundation. The Harmonized Structure keeps integration with ISO 9001, 45001, 50001 and 27001.
Transition period
The transition period is 36 months from publication, i.e. until April 2029. Until then, ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid. Plan the transition audit with your certification body.
Transition in six steps
1. Find out where you stand: identify gaps with the free maturity check.
2. Extend the context: assess environmental conditions such as climate, biodiversity and resources.
3. Life cycle and supply chain: review the scope and externally provided processes, products and services.
4. Update environmental aspects and risks/opportunities.
5. Manage changes to the environmental management system in a planned way; adapt the environmental policy.
6. Audit internally and feed the results into the management review.
